How to create a staging environment for your WordPress website

When you purchase WordPress hosting with VisitingHost, you'll gain access to WordPress Toolkit which is a tool to help you set up and maintain your WordPress websites.

In this article, we are going to cover how to create a staging environment for your website.

Let's get started.

First, as always, you'll have to log in to cPanel. You can do this through the Client Area or with your username and password directly through cPanel at this link.

Once you're in cPanel, search for WordPress Toolkit and click on the only result that shows up.

In WordPress toolkit, you'll see all the websites you've already installed and the actions you can perform on them. For this purpose, we're looking at a certain action called "Clone".

If you have your subdomain already, you can proceed further.

To start the process, press the "Clone" button.

Then, choose the domain you'd like to use for the staging website and click "Start".

When the process starts, you can close WordPress Toolkit and even log out of cPanel, the process will not be interrupted. You can also monitor the progress and see at which stage of the cloning the process is at.

Once the process is complete, you will be able to open the website at the staging domain, provided that the DNS for the subdomain has propagated.

Final thoughts

When maintaining a website, it's critical to ensure the website is always up and running, even when you are doing some updates to it. By creating a WordPress Staging website, you can easily test changes and make sure nothing breaks when you apply them on the production website afterward.
